In this case, I decided to switch from mpich 1.2.7 to OpenMPI, on the hopes it would be better for the system and easier to set up.

However, nothing linked properly. If the software compiled, then it would have tons of MPI related errors. As a rule, I install all the libraries needed to run the model in the /opt directory, since it's easier to have more than one version of various libraries (different versions, different compilers, 32 vs 64 bit, etc), so I didn't think there could be a conflict in the libraries.

http://www.paleoterra.com/2009/05/6/climate-model-mac-15-watch-those-dynamic-libraries#comments climate modeling Macintosh PGI Sat, 30 May 2009 15:08:00 +0000 tmoore 35 at http://www.paleoterra.com Climate model on a mac project: #10 Rebuilding http://www.paleoterra.com/2008/06/2/climate-model-mac-project-10-rebuilding
Now that the model clearly works using the test license from Portland, it's time to rebuild the system. So far, I've reinstalled MacOS onto the system and installed the developer tools.

Next, I installed required version control software. At this point, subversion and cvs are already on the system so I only needed to install GIT.

The next step in the process is to migrate my subversion and git repositories to the new system and get the servers going.

http://www.paleoterra.com/2008/06/2/climate-model-mac-project-10-rebuilding#comments FOAM Macintosh PGI Tue, 17 Jun 2008 23:07:00 +0000 tmoore 24 at http://www.paleoterra.com Climate Model on a Mac Project #6: Success! http://www.paleoterra.com/2008/05/5/climate-model-mac-project-6-success
After a long struggle trying to work with various compilers, today, I decided to try the Portland C/Fortran compilers. I've had success with them before. Fortunately for me, it worked! I actually got the model running at a low resolution! Tomorrow, I'll try a high resolution.

http://www.paleoterra.com/2008/05/5/climate-model-mac-project-6-success#comments FOAM hardware Macintosh PGI Fri, 23 May 2008 17:35:00 +0000 tmoore 20 at http://www.paleoterra.com Climate Model on a Mac Project #4: Installing ROCKS http://www.paleoterra.com/2008/05/3/climate-model-mac-project-4-installing-rocks
ROCKS is an NSF (National Science Foundation) supported project to develop and maintain cluster environments so they provide cluster installs for a wide variety of platforms. It contains the usual things, like PBS, ganglia, and many others.

To install, the first thing was to add a new SATA drive to the machine. I had a 250 gig lying around so I added it to bay 2 on the mac.

http://www.paleoterra.com/2008/05/3/climate-model-mac-project-4-installing-rocks#comments linux Macintosh PGI sata Wed, 14 May 2008 15:12:00 +0000 tmoore 18 at http://www.paleoterra.com
